I liked this book up until it divulged the fact Suzette had a fiancé. Um, what? It throws the whole premise of why Suzette chose prostitution as a means to survive, under the bus.I would have thought that Suzette would have made all kinds of effort to get a message to him even though he was in the military someone would have known how to get word to him.
But instead, it was made to seem as though Suzette had no one other than the neighbors and relatives in America.
I get that the fiancé was supposed to be a humdinger of a plot twist but it fell flat. I think the whole fiancé charade was a ploy to have a love triangle because other authors have successfully pulled it off in their novels but it did not work for this book.

I don't recall reading a book in this genre that had me actually weeping from the beginning. I felt like I was walking in Suzette's shoes. Suzette's quandary....fell flat for me. (Book One The Legacy Series) I do plan on reading book 2. Enjoy it's worth your time.
I pride myself on finishing a book, no matter what. But I just could not finish the Price of Innocence. It was just poorly written. The vocabulary was elementary and at times used dull, modern phrases. I think what bothered me the most was the dialogue. Everything the characters said was dull, and stilted, with a basic vocabulary.
Took half the book, moving at a snail's pace, for heroine to even make initial contact with hero. Spent rest of book convincing us to like hero, who then ends up marrying someone else and forces heroine into someone else's arms. I'm still scratching my head in disbelief.
Awful. Sorry to be so critical but I found it hard to read since both the main characters had no redeeming qualities. It was very hard to sympathize with the characters and the situations they ended up in. In fact, I regret that I read this entire book. They were both selfish, childish and ridiculously stupid. Suzette was incredibly rude and superior to everyone she met, but for being a supposedly educated person made senseless choices. She was critical of the girls in the brothel but she choose to become Robert’s mistress to pay him back for saving her and buying her nice things. How was she any different? Robert proclaimed to love her although he basically used her for his own selfish reasons and only regretted that he got caught. The whole secret fiancee thing was a strange twist as well. I don’t think any of the characters would know love if it slapped them in the face. They each got what they deserved. Also, characters used language that was not appropriate for the time period which is annoying.
All I can say is annoying and obvious plot and women characters that were pathetic and always a victim. Even after I thought there was going to be someone who restores Suzette to her station in life she gives her virtue to a man without questions and makes herself a fallen woman.
Yes, at the end everything works out but all I could think of were the movies, "Tess, and French lieutenant woman." Both tragic but still a better story.
That's pretty much the moral of this story.
I normally don't give 1 star reviews, but I refuse to change my rating unless this book gets re-categorized into its proper place as a "historical drama" or simply a "historical novel." The fact that this was deemed a romance was what threw me off kilter. Although the description says that this book "sets the stage" for a lifelong romance... I still can't quite get past this horrible, depressing feeling that's been sitting in my gut from the moment I finished. There wasn't even a balance between the highs and lows - the latter being in the vast majority.
If this author is trying for a Wuthering Heights type of tragedy/devastation romance novel, she's way off the mark. I'll only tolerate this type of dismal storyline in someone with a more finely tuned literary talent like Thomas Hardy.
In any matter... I agree with the others in the one star category - this is not a romance. My recommendation is for anyone wanting to read this series to wait for the last book to come out, then read all of them together. Perhaps that will make this first course leave less of a bitter taste in your mouth.
May 24th After more consideration, I'm still not changing my review. I keep reading these other reviews speaking of this emotional romance between these characters... but I still can't see it. Emotional, surely... romantic? Heck no. The main character was shallow, juvenile and self-centered, albeit with a bit of a soft spot for the heroine, but still utterly and completely selfish to anything but his own emotional and physical needs. He didn't even see her as a person - a human being with her own needs and wants. That's not love to me... and that's not romance, either. Doing something as life-altering as he did while keeping the heroine in the dark, and in essence, just assuming that she would be fine with whatever crumbs he gave her?
Nope... still not a romance. If you think it is, I can't even imagine what kind of a life you've been living. That thought's even more depressing than this book.
